Summer Solstice |

Summer is officially here! And, as usual the to-do list is abundant. Thankfully, so are the veggies! Last week David and I were able to leave the farm in Adam's capable hands and pop down to Port Aransas for a few days. It was great! We played in the waves, slept, collected shells, slept, went parasailing, and slept a little more! It was a nice little get away and we came home ready to push through until our big break in August. As soon as we returned, we were back in full motion preparing for the two farmer's markets we are now attending on Satudays; SFC in Sunset Valley and New Braunfels Farm-to-Market in my hometown. Today we woke up with the sun and harvested 400 pounds of summer squash and about 200 pounds of cucumbers. After lunch we made quick work of pickling 60 jars of David's soon-to-be-famous dill pickles and had to stop only because we ran out of mustard seed. We tried out a few recipes in the fall on our CSA members and we are really excited to be making them again after the overwhelming repsonses we got from everyone. We will be bringing them to most of our markets along with a few other preserves we have been canning, like peach butter and pickled beets. When we decide to preserve produce we seek out recipes that call for the least ammount of ingredients and the most that can come from our resources right here in the garden. We are even working on our first batch of homemade vinegar. We are creating everyday pantry items using 3 or 4 staples (water, vinegar, salt, sugar) and super fresh veggies, you can't get better than that! These special treats go quickly so send us an e-mail if you would like us to put your name on a jar or two. Klausen ain't got nothin' on us!
Next Saturday after the market we will be attending the Slow Food Austin Showcase sampling our preserves along with other local, sustainably focused vendors. Along with our pickles other vendors will be offering cheese, breads, olive oil, coffee, teas, beer, wine, meats, produce, honey, syrup, and more! If you are ever standing there in the grocery store wondering what hydrobiclorinatetango no.5 is and why it is your jelly then this is the event for you. You won't find any weird lab ingredients in these exceptional local products!
Well, I thought I'd have more in me but it's getting late and David said he was gonna duck tape a weedeater in my hands at sunrise so I better tuck myself in for the night!
Juntos todo es possible! Together all is possible!
