Spring Flowers |
Coming into this spring has popped up a lot of hope around here at Montesino. Not that we had lost it, but maybe we couldn't see it under so many sheets of ice.
Our last freeze came at the beginning of April and with a few dry days we prepped the soil and planted as fast as possible. The crew worked to get that first leg up on all the weeds that have also been expiriencing a growth spirt through the warmer nights and longer days. We sometimes say that in farming you are always a week behind. Due to weather or time constraints there is generally this feeling of catching up, but for a moment last week with all of the water lines mowed, everything hoed, every ready inch planted, and the greenhouses empty we felt that maybe we were finally AHEAD. It felt great, even if it was just a moment.
What I love about farming in the spring is that the reward for hard work is unavoidable, even for someone like me who is always looking for the things to improve. With the poppies, sweet peas, and other garden flowers finally feeling that urge to spread their seed in showy presentation, and the peaches hanging on to all their blossoms growing bigger every day, the blackberries even covering the orchard in flowers, how can one not feel accomplished in the evident fruits of their labor? After a long winter, I found myself needing a reminder of what this was about for me, thankfully all the seeds had been planted long ago.

Artichokes |
These are the first few artichokes from the field. We are hoping to bring lots to the market this year!

Parsnips |
This was our second year to try parsnips. It is one of our favorite vegetables and we are really excited to be able to share them with the community. If you aren't familiar with them try adding them to a simple veggie roast or mashed. You can even make a really yummy soup by roasting then pureeing them with veggie stock.

Wimberley Farmer's Market is Moving |
For all of our devoted Wimberley Farmer's Market supporters, I'd like to remind you that the market will be moving Wednesday, May 5th. Our new location will be in the parking lot at the Senoir Citizen Thrift Store, 14050 RR12. Our hours will remain 3- 6. We hope that in moving to a more prevelant location we will be able to entice more villagers to stop by and interact with their local agriculture. We also hope that through that growth we can entice new vendors (like meat, dairy, fruit, and prepared foods) to join us in diversifying the market offerings. It takes two, so why dontcha' jump in and vote with your dollars and you can take pride in knowing you make a difference in your community!
